Intuitive Eating Can Bring Up Many Emotions

The following text was initially written on May 6, 2007, which was basically a couple months into my intuitive eating journey. Most recently, I started to journal my thoughts, inner feelings, hunger level and food intake. I just did this for around a day and a half before breaking down. I began the journal this past Thursday and by Friday lunch, I was a damaged child hidden in the corner.

For a very long time, I had myself convinced that I hadn’t been stuffing my emotions down using food all of these years. I just recently recognized that there were triggers for eating excessively but I never recognized that there was some deep stuff activating my triggers. I never thought that I had those types of issues. Today, I realize that I’ve been stuffing it all down, the shame, the guilt, the hatred, the resentment, everything.

Obviously, I have not gone through my adult life oblivious to the fact that I have made mistakes and also that people have taken parts of my soul. But what I have done is cover up all that with cynicism and also a “poor pitiful me” act. And without realizing it, thinking I was eating the stresses and strains of the day away, what I was actually doing was cramming all the “negative” stuff further and further into my heart and mind. As a result of that, I’ve ended up with rolls, folds, lumps and bumps which have come to be my shield.
